With the few short weeks since racing in the warmth of Queensland Raceway, it was back to work for the Championship leader, and back to the cool weather of Southern Victoria.
Phillip Island, probably the best race track in Australia for young, fast, and brave Formula Ford drivers to show what it means to race wheel to wheel at 230km/hr plus speeds and put it all on the line in the quest for that golden moment… being crowned National Formula Ford Champion.
To go down in the history books forever, with the names like Tander, Lowndes, Whincup, Ingall, Davison, and others in this 40th anniversary of Formula Ford is what all young race drivers aspire to…
Opening the weekend was the traditional Practice sessions, and it was Percat who topped the morning time sheet with the fastest time of the day. ” About what we expected here as we tested last week and I was able to run around on old tyres for most of the day in the low 1 min 38 second mark, so I feel comfortable that the SONIC boys have given me the car to do the job this weekend” smiled Percat.
Friday was a busy day for Formula Ford, with the unusual case of having 3 sessions in one day and the final being the sole Qualifying session, held late in the afternoon. Percat rolled onto the circuit followed closely by team mate Mitch Evans as they sprinted away from the field looking for clean air to set a time. ” I got out of the gate pretty fast, knowing that the new tyre here is only good for a maximum of 3 laps, so I put my head down and thought I had done enough… but it looks like Mitch caught a little bit of a tow from my car, and that was enough for him to Pole it, but having said that the 2nd row is hardly the end of the world, and we will work hard to win the coming races” smiled a determined Percat, with his focus firmly on the Championship.
Saturday was going to be over quicker than usual, with race 1 the only item on the agenda for the Formula Ford racers.
Percat got a cracking start from his 3rdGrid slot, instantly firing past Scott Pye, and ran formation with Mitch Evans over the opening lap, building a solid gap back to 3rdin what was a brilliant demonstration drive by the SONIC team mates. Having split the field wide open, it was then Percat’s turn to lead as they exchanged the lead numerous times over the course of the 10 laps, however it was Percat who held sway and won his 11thrace of the year. “Mitch had some really good pace in that race, but I knew that once I had seen off the best of his new tyres, I would be able to win…. It was also nice to reset my own lap record here, and that one might last for a while too!” said Percat on returning to the garage.
Sunday was going to be Championship day, well that is what Percat had in mind when he rolled out for race 2.
Nick explains “I have set myself targets and goals all year, and this race was like no other, if I had the pace to win, which it looked like I did, I would go for the win… but I wanted to wrap the title up today so the Gold Coast event can be a bit of a celebration for myself and the SONIC team”
So with it all to play for, Percat lined up alongside team mate Mitch Evans in typical Phillip Island conditions, cool, wet, and changeable by the minute.
Getting a good start from Pole, Percat put in a blistering opening lap, nearly 2 seconds faster than his nearest rival and laid the foundations to his victory early in the race. ” I felt very comfortable out there, and was able to dictate the pace right to the finish, so I am very proud to have been able to take victory in not only this race, but that seals the 2009 Championship, something I have been working towards for a long time” said an obviously over the moon Percat.
Race 3 was held only hours later, so it was a quick turn around for drivers and mechanics, as they formed up the final race.
Percat once again got a great start from Pole position and led the field away. The circuit had taken a spattering of rain in certain sections of the track moments before the start, leaving the field to feel out the grip from corner to corner, however it wasn’t long before the safety car was needed to clear up an accident on the approach to “Honda” corner.
“I was pretty comfortable by that stage really as I had good tyre temperature, however following the safety car restart I was pretty much a sitting duck, as I was first on the road with the damp conditions, being the “pioneer” in finding out the grip levels, I managed to fire it off the road at Siberia, and it took me a long time to get it back through the grass and onto the track…. But these things happen, and its my only mistake for 2009, so I figure I was due one!…” said a circumspect Percat knowing that whatever happens, his goal for 2009 has been achieved, and in grand style!
With one more round remaining for 2009, and the championship his, there is only one more record for Percat to take with him, and that is the most wins in one year, currently held by Steven Richards at 13…. Nick just needs one more to equal that…
“Right now I am off to Hawaii with Lucas Dumbrell who is taking me for a holiday in the sun, however there is a small chance that I could go back to the UK and go one step further at the Festival which would be nice, but that will really depend on finances coming from somewhere… So if there is anyone willing to back me to win it, I will certainly give it a good crack!” beamed Percat.
